Hi Sara

At one point I thought it might be an idea to try this diet, but to be honest at the time my RA was way out of control and the thought I was suffering enough without restricting my food so much, I wanted some pleasures ! I do take a high strength Omega 3 daily and try to eat fairly healthy foods.

Hi Sara

I was diagnosed with coeliac disease from biopsies in 2010 and have been gluten free since then. Have had RA since 1972 and on many different powerful drugs which I always blamed for stomach probs.

Since excluding gluten (easy at home, not so much when eating out) I have gained some much needed weight and my absorption of vitamin B and D has improved. I am on Rituximab and steroids and fingers crossed the RA is reasonably stable at the moment.

I hadn't realised how serious coeliac disease can be and sometimes without symptoms, but Coeliac UK is a good website with loads of information. It isnt an allergy or intolerance but an autoimmune disease just like and often linked to RA.

I see a gastroenterologist and a dietician at the hospital for the coeliac, referred by my rheumy, and they are very helpful with monitoring it.

Hope this helps a little,
take care,
Lizxx

Thanks for your replies

Having read up on this recently it seems like there maybe a little extra hope for some by converting to this. Like many others I believed that you would be underweight, and that food with gluten would go straight through you - how wrong and even naive of me to think so! It is in fact an autoimmune disease!! you check the myths out at Coeliac Uk http://www.coeliac.org.u...s-about-coeliac-disease and many like myself are overweight and have thyroid problems too. I have had a blood test to check, the doctors reception say this has coming back negative however I still will confirm with the doctor as I'm afraid they are pretty useless and forever getting things wrong, but I have tried to change over no gluten as much as possible and am pleasantly surprised at how alert I feel so will keep going and see.
